Striving for the Chance to 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games!

As the last chance to 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, I have sent a letter to our disabled association on 29.7.2007 as follows:

Dear Iris,

Over the phone on 27.7.2007, we have discussed about my request of participating more table tennis tournaments so as to get more credits to be qualified for Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. As requested by you, I would like to provide you the background information supporting my request.

(1) Increase of Slots Allocation

In May 2007, the IPTTC Executive Committee increased the slots allocation for Women Class 5 from 11 to 16 (see attachment – Beijing-2008-IPTTC-General-Informations.pdf). Such adjustment largely enlarged my chance of being qualified for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.

(2) Ranking in the Preview of World Ranking List for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games

In the preview of world ranking list for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games Women Class 5, I am now at the rank of 20 (see attachment – Women class 5 at 2008-1-1 (count best 6 tournaments).pdf). Among the ranking players, FUNG Yuet-wah(ranking 16) already suspended her playing while HSIAO Shu-chin (ranking 13) would not be selected for the Regional Championship by Taipei Disabled Association as they stuck to 2-players’ policy. It means that my ranking position would be better than present. I would be in the slots selection if I am given chances to participate more tournaments to get more credits.

(3) Performance in Hong Kong Open

Facing the strong opponents from Asian and European countries, my performance in Hong Kong Open was good. As a matter of fact, I only lost with some strong players with very closed marks. After learnt a lot in the tournament, I had confidence to win them in coming competitions. Overall speaking, I was ranked 4th among 20 Hong Kong players (see attachment – 20070724_HKG_HongKongOpen.pdf).

(4) Performance in Local Competitions

During the local competition held in April 2007, I got one gold medal and one silver medal in the event. In addition, I had good results in the monthly internal competitions – 1st in April 2007; 2nd in May 2007; and 1st in June 2007.

(5) Suggestion of Tournaments

For the IPTTC’s Tournament Credit System, the 6 best tournaments would be counted for the slots selection, I thus requested to participate other 5 tournaments with reasons as follows (for related tournaments, please see attachment – IPTTC tournaments calendar.pdf):

(a) Ligano Master Open 2007 held in Italy from 12.9.2007 to 16.9.2007 – experiences tells us that the players participating Italian tournaments are not so strong.

(b) Copa Tango V held in Buenos Aires Argentina held from 1.11.2007 to 5.11.2007 – the standard of American players is not high and it makes us easier to get credits.

(c) Asian & Oceanian TT Championships 2007 held in Korea from 10.11.2007 to 20.11.2007 – as it is an Asian Regional Championship, our participation of the Games is undoubtful. In addition, I would play with Chinese team that I does not meet this year and it can test my skills.

(d) Crotia Open held in Pula, Crotia from 11.12.2007 to 16.12.2007 – with the tournament factor of 30, more credits would be earned for winning each event.

(e) 2007 U.S. Paralympics Open held in Chicago, USA from 27.12.2007 to 31.12.2007 – the standard of American players is not high and it makes us easier to get credits. Experiences also tells me that our participitaion could stop those marginal players from getting credits and obtaining the quota. The most important is that it is the last chance for entering to the selection slots.

Beijing 2008 is the first time of our mother country, China, to held the Paralympic Games. As Hong Kong is the SAR of China, every Hong Kong atheletes would try their very best to get the chance to take part of it. I, being an enthisiastic Hong Kong atheletes, when facing such good chance, got no reason not to actively strive for participating and supporting such large Games held in our mother country. I strongly believe that both you and SAPD would share the same vision with me.

Best regards,
Pui-yi
